What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also known as an EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback is a type of therapy that provides the patient immediate feedback from a computer-based program that assesses that patients current brainwave activity. The program then uses visual or auditory queues to retrain these brain signals. During this type of therapy, patients will learn how to regulate and improve their brain function and to alleviate symptoms of various neurological and mental health disorders.

What to Expect?

Neurofeedback therapy typically consists of two days per week for an average of 20 sessions. Some people will need less, while other patients will need more. When you arrive for your therapy, we will have you sit down in a chair when the therapist puts the sensors on your head. Our cap, compared to others is a dry cap so there is no need for messy gel in your hair. Then with the cap on, our EEG program will process your brain signals and provide us information about various brainwave frequencies. Using a program similar to a video game, we will have you watch different graphics or listen to music while your brain and central nervous system receive feedback signals from the program. Then using the program we will begin directing your brainwave activity toward more desirable and controlled patterns. You will get immediate feedback from the program when your brainwave patterns improve. Between sessions, you should be able to notice changes in stress, sleep patterns, or mental clarity.

Patient Prep for a qEEG

Evening before the test:

• Do not drink any alcohol.
• Get a list of your medications and dosage ready to bring.
• Get a good night sleep (test cannot be done if you are drowsy)

Morning before the test:

• Wash your hair thoroughly
• Do not use cream rinse or conditioner, hair spray, mousse, etc. These products can leave a residue that make it difficult to get accurate EEG readings.
• Dry your hair before and do not braid it.
• Be extremely moderate in consumption of caffeinated beverages.

Dr. Ralph DeStephano, Chiropractic Neurologist

At Chicago Neuro, we work with adults and children to promote relief for some fairly common disruptors of life – anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraine, headaches, learning difficulties & behavioral disorders – to name a few. We also work with clients whose basic life functions have been deeply compromised by stroke, Autism, Asperger’s, Parkinson’s, head injury and similar.

We address brain dysregulations large and small at their causative root using Neurofeedback – a non-invasive, non-drug, no side-effect, gentle, yet effective, training process for the brain. With a series of sessions, most people report reduction or elimination of the symptoms that were troubling them.  Many of our clients have “tried everything” before they found us.

“We offer people hope and healing.”
